HCCU’s New ATMs

HCCU is happy to announce the installation of two brand new ATM machines at our King St. and Mohawk Rd. locations. This investment in new technology is in keeping with HCCU’s dedication of providing the best services to our members.

Why did we need to replace the ATMs?

There are several reasons HCCU made the decision to invest in technology and replace our ATM machines. First, the ATMs we had reached the end of their life cycle and were beginning to malfunction. This made them very labour intensive and required plenty of man hours to keep them online and running smoothly. This was also the final year that we could obtain a service contract for repairs. With the frequency of malfunctions being reported it was time they were replaced.

The other reason for the replacement has to do with system compliancy in order to provide you, our members, with the service and convenience you require. Services such as Interac, allowing you access to your funds across the globe, and the Exchange Network, which provides service charge free transactions and depository services at 2,100 ATMs across Canada, all require HCCU to comply with certain regulations and industry standards. Our ATMs must be Interac and Exchange compatible; something our old machines were not. Moving forward with Canada’s adoption of Chip Technology requires all ATMs be Chip compliant; something our old machines could not be upgraded to.

As you can see the investment HCCU has made in to new technology and our new ATMs positions us positively for the future.

On Going Issues and Possible Glitches

During the installation of any new technology, glitches may arise and problems will have to be worked through. The installation of our new ATMs is no exception and we ask that you be patient with us as we work through any errors. There are currently a few issues we are aware of and our working around the clock to resolve.

HCCU members are being charged a $1.25 service charge for transactions at our ATM. Our banking system provider, is aware of this error and will rectify this as soon as possible. In the meantime a report is being produced and all members will have any incorrect charges reversed.

There may be several members whose debit cards need to be repinned in one of our branches in order for your card to work at our new ATM machines and on the Interac network. Regulations require a four (4) digit PIN number to be used on all ATM machines. If you were using a PIN with more than four digits at our machines, you should now be using your new four digit number as you would when using your card at any other financial institution’s machine. If you have never set up a four digit number you will need to visit one of our branches to do so.

If you have any other issues, problems, concerns or questions regarding our ATM machines or your debit card, please consult either branch and we`ll be happy to work through these issues.

Again HCCU thanks you for your patience during this installation period. In the near future you can look forward to new innovative features and functionality being added to our ATMs to provide you, our members, with the best service possible.

I have a concern with the King Street machine, the display is so birght and large that it is easily visible to anyone walking by. Our privacy and information needs to be better protected.

Thank You for your comment R. Bagley. We appreciate any feedback we can receive regarding new products and technology.

Please be assured that member privacy is extremely important to HCCU and that we are always taking measures to insure your information is safe and secure. Our new ATMs were purchased from NCR Canada, a world leader in ATM technology and the same makers of our previous ATMs. The ATMs built by NCR undergo rigorous testing for not only functionality and ease of use, but also for security and privacy. One feature the new ATMs are equipped with is a glass on the screen that makes them only visible when someone is standing directly in front of them. If you view the screens from any angle they appear completely black.

That said we are in contact with NCR to see if there are any additional privacy features that can be equipped on our machines to help keep our members information private and safe.

We have also requested a list of all the privacy features installed on our machines that can be relayed to our members to insure that we are protecting their personal information.

Thanks again for your comments and concern.

the only thing I didn't like is the machines talking out loud. When I'm in the little space where the machines are, and someone else is there to use the machine as well. I don't like them hearing what the machine is indicating to me.

I like the new machines that HCCU has purchased. I just feel that they are too loud which means others can hear if they are behind you in line.

I agree. The machine is much too loud! It really doesn't need to 'speak' at all, except perhaps for visually impaired users who might opt for such services.

My problem is the one on Mohawk is very low .. I have to go down to my knees to use it .. and yes .. of course the machine talking to you isnt nice either

in agreement with most comments - the voice is too loud as is the beeping - horrible
the light is harsh and what is with all this plastic it is made with?
i too find the machine too low and i am not a tall person?
great that the machines are more advanced for technology but the looks and design are quite poor

I made a deposit at the atm machine last night. Having previously read blogs concerning privacy I stood about six feet back from the machine as it waited for me to deposit the envelope, I could clearly see the screen in full view. I was not black, nor unreadable. HCCU you should check this out. It is a concern to me.

I have had problems using my card for withdrawals at other Exchange and Bank machines in general.

I am very dependent on ATM's since the HCCU only has two branches in the whole area.

If I am not able to access my accounts from these machines I will have to move all of my finances to another institution

In regards to some of your concerns......

HCCU is currently reviewing our options for the voice notification as this seems to be the number one issue that we are hearing about.

In regards to the height of the machine, the ATM is placed at a level to make it wheel chair accessible. The majority of newly developed machines are now built with a lower stance to provide ease of access to all users.

In regards to privacy, the screen will not appear black if you are looking at it straight on from any distance, rather only when viewing from an angle. Under normal use the screen should be blocked by your body if someone was standing directly behind you and only visible from an angle at which point it would appear black. Again this is something that we are still reviewing to see what added security could be adapted to the machine.

If you are having any problems with your Member Cards, you will need to contact the branch so we can review exactly what the problem is with your card, and rectify the situation to get your account accessible from any location.

Again, HCCU thanks you for all your comments and concerns. The more we hear from our members the better we can address the concerns and come to a resolution.

I agree the voice and the screen brightness is a concern. Other than that, thank you HCCU keeping up with technology and my hard earned money safe!

I can't believe all of these negative comments! It is the 21st century. Perhaps we need to continue to do business from 10:00 AM til 3:00 PM and keep a little bank book that the nice teller can pencil in all of the transactions. Imagine, electronically obtaining funds. There are devices today that will actually transmit moving pictures right into your living room. I find the new ATM machines terrific.Money well spent. R. McAllister

1. Don't like the machine talking to me.
2. The machine is too low.
3. The screen is too large,it makes it easier for people behind you to see what your doing.
4. Doesn't show the months transactions.

I've used the new machines on a number of occasions and I love them. The audio does not release any personal information so I don't understand all of the complaints. Maybe if you didn't choose to do your banking on your knees, people wouldn't be able to read your balances. Also, the screens are meant to be black from the sides, not the front. I think the machines are very user friendly. Keep it up HCCU!
